Safety of Baby Products Gives Peace of Mind to New Moms and Dads

Any woman who has been pregnant can confirm that pregnancy is filled with worries. Granted, some of these worries are unfounded, but moms-to-be and dads-to-be often fret about anything that seems or feels out of the ordinary. Whether buying baby products for your own infant or choosing a gift for a baby shower, your first stop should be the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. (CPSC). The CPSC has the latest information on recent recalls of dangerous baby products - information that is crucial to have before you begin shopping. For example, the CPSC recently issued a recall on a stroller with double seats because children in the add-on seat could touch the rear tires, which poses an abrasion hazard. Similarly, a manufacturer voluntarily recalled children's parka jackets, which had a hood drawstring that posed a strangulation hazard. And a major mass merchandiser pulled over 200,000 toys from their shelves that had either lead paint, sharp points, or choking hazards.

Car Seats

When it comes to infant car seats, your best bet is to buy a brand new car seat. Used car seats may seem more economical, but they may not be safe. If a car seat is more than ten years old or has been involved in a crash, it may not be structurally sound. Similarly, car seats have an "expiration date," so double check that the car seat you buy is up-to-date. Resist the temptation to buy a seat that your infant will "grow into," as he or she can slip out of car seats that are too large. As a reminder, infants should ride in a rear-facing seat until they're at least one year old and at least 20 pounds.

Cribs

New cribs are always the best bet for meeting the latest safety standards. These standards include making sure that the distance between the slats is no more than 2-3/8 inches; that the mattress fits snugly into the crib; and that the top of the side rail, when at its lowest position, is at least 26 inches about the mattress.

Crib Safety For Your Baby

There comes a time when every child needs to be put in there crib. For most parents, this is around three months old. Others may do it earlier, some regret doing it later. Whatever time frame you and your husband decide on, be sure to have a crib that is up to date and meets all safety requirements.

If you were given a crib by your mother that has been passed down from generation to generation, chances are it is not up to specks. It may have lead paint and that is dangerous for all babies. It may not meet the required space limit either. The bars on a crib should be spaced apart no more than 2 3/8 inch. Anything wider can be dangerous for infants because there is a possibility that they can get their head stuck in the bars. If you were given an antique crib that was made prior to 1974, chances are that it does not follow this guidelines. Throw out any cribs that have decorative cutouts or corner posts as well.

You also should make sure that there are no cutouts on the baby's headboard or footboard. This can cause their head to get trapped as well. You want to get a crib that has headboards and footboard that are all one piece. The top rails of crib sides, in their raised position, should be at least 26 inches above the top of the mattress supporting its lowest position.

Cribs should be kept away from other pieces of furniture in the room, especially if your child is pulling up and walking. A child who has a crib placed near a dresser can get hurt depending on the objects that are placed on top of the dresser. A baby monitor that is attached to a cord can be pulled into the crib causing a choking hazard for the child. Glass frames and other pictures that can be picked up and then stood on are a risk simply because the glass can break and cut the child. Make sure you take all precautions when it comes to your child's safety and their crib. Always check on them when they are left alone in a crib and never let a sibling get them out of it without your help.

We purchased this item for our newborn to replace the cushion we previously used for our daughter. We choose this item because we thought it would be larger and our newborn could use longer. Not so, it is actually smaller than our old one. It's cute so we'll keep but disappointed in the size.

This was only but its I wish I hadnt spent.
This is pretty thin and very cheaply made. It is also not soft at all like youd think and expect. It feels like scratchy acrylic or something. You would be better off laying a towel down and putting the baby on that.
We have one we bought at Target that I love. I think its from the parents or parenting brand, its yellow with a little heat sensor thing on it that turns white if the water is too hot. I love that one. I only bought the frog because I thought it would be something a little more cute. I'll be sticking with using the old one.

Safety 1st Kirby Inflatable Tub Review

After my son outgrew the infant tub, then became too boisterous for the kitchen sink, but was still afraid of the big tub, I found this tub as a solution. It works just right for us right now at 15 months, very comfy and safe and fills up quickly. But it's not very big, so in a few more months we'll probably need to transition to something else. I wish I had bought the Snug Tub instead since that looks a little bit roomier, but I've been very happy with this tub.

Other reviewers have noted problems with seams leaking, especially near the drain plug, which I can imagine since this is not heirloom-quality or anything. :-) But I haven't had trouble with that, perhaps because I leave it inflated and don't use the drain plug-- I just dump it out and hang it by its loop on my shower organizer.

My son was getting too big for his infant tub so I did ALOT of research about different ones when he was about 7 months old. He was big for his age, both height and weight but still a bit young to just stick in the tub. My husband and I absolutely love this tub, it's perfect because he can move around and play but it protects him if he slips sideways. I wouldnt recommend this tub for a baby that isnt really sturdy sitting up on his own though, you'd have to hold him the whole time. This tub is great after you're done, you just hang it up to dry and keep it inflated for next time. He's now almost 11 months and has alot room to grow into it, so we'll have it for awhile. Highly recommended

For the price and sense of security this little tub gives me ... it's fantastic. Got this for our son when he was getting too big for the infant tub when he was around 6 months old. I wish we'd gotten it a little sooner. We haven't had any trouble with leaking or anything like that. We inflated it the first night and then just keep it inflated hung on the robe hooks on the back of the bathroom door with some of the little links for baby toys. Perfect. Our son loved it from the the first night and he can kick and play but still have safe soft sides that work as a bumper from our huge cast iron tub. It is small, but perfect for a starting to sit baby and will probably work for us a few more months at least.

We bought this for our vacation so that our eight month old baby would have a nice place to bathe. It worked great during the vacation. We inflated it and deflated it to pack it in the suitcase. We didn't force it to deflate. Then, I decided to use it as a transition bath tub when our baby outgrew the infant tub. I blew it up and then the next day, the top section was deflated. There is three sections to blow up - the bottom of the tub, the bottom section of the bath wall and the top section. We blew up the top wall section again, thinking maybe the stopper wasn't inserted correctly. The very next day that section was deflated again. It is a slow leak. It is still usable, but obviously holds only half the water. That is why there is only 2 stars.
