Safety of Baby Products Gives Peace of Mind to New Moms and Dads

Any woman who has been pregnant can confirm that pregnancy is filled with worries. Granted, some of these worries are unfounded, but moms-to-be and dads-to-be often fret about anything that seems or feels out of the ordinary. To ensure that the pregnancy goes as smoothly as possible, most women seek out the latest and best pregnancy information, adjust their lifestyles to optimize the health of their babies, and get regular prenatal care.

Among the most enjoyable activities during pregnancy are choosing baby products and registering for gifts for baby showers. If couples have already chosen baby names, it's especially exciting to receive personalized gifts for their newborns. In the midst of planning for a new baby, though, new parents often overlook one crucial element of baby products: their safety. Knowing which car seats, cribs, strollers, furniture, and clothing meet stringent safety standards can go far in providing new moms and dads with peace of mind.

Recalls of Baby Products

Whether buying baby products for your own infant or choosing a gift for a baby shower, your first stop should be the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. (CPSC). The CPSC has the latest information on recent recalls of dangerous baby products - information that is crucial to have before you begin shopping. For example, the CPSC recently issued a recall on a stroller with double seats because children in the add-on seat could touch the rear tires, which poses an abrasion hazard. Similarly, a manufacturer voluntarily recalled children's parka jackets, which had a hood drawstring that posed a strangulation hazard. And a major mass merchandiser pulled over 200,000 toys from their shelves that had either lead paint, sharp points, or choking hazards.

Car Seats

When it comes to infant car seats, your best bet is to buy a brand new car seat. Used car seats may seem more economical, but they may not be safe. If a car seat is more than ten years old or has been involved in a crash, it may not be structurally sound. Similarly, car seats have an "expiration date," so double check that the car seat you buy is up-to-date. Resist the temptation to buy a seat that your infant will "grow into," as he or she can slip out of car seats that are too large. As a reminder, infants should ride in a rear-facing seat until they're at least one year old and at least 20 pounds.

Cribs

New cribs are always the best bet for meeting the latest safety standards. These standards include making sure that the distance between the slats is no more than 2-3/8 inches; that the mattress fits snugly into the crib; and that the top of the side rail, when at its lowest position, is at least 26 inches about the mattress.

Selecting baby products and receiving baby products as gifts is exciting, as it adds to the anticipation of the day when your new baby will arrive. And, by making sure that the baby products you choose are safe, you will have one less thing to worry about!

New Baby? Choosing Eco Baby Products

Many new parents want the best for their children but quite often people worry about eco baby products in that they may be a compromise in quality for their child.

Eco baby clothes and other eco products for babies and children can often be seen as inferior to traditional cotton clothes and that quite often puts people off.

However, some eco baby clothes are in no way inferior to traditional cotton baby grows and other children's clothing. In fact some eco baby clothes a far better at keeping babies warm than regular fabrics and the fact that they are eco friendly is just an added advantage.
Bamboo Baby Grow

Bamboo is the perfect fabric for baby clothes as it is not only as warm and soft as cotton but it yields some remarkable qualities that other materials used in manufacturing children's clothes just can't match.

Not only is bamboo every bit as soft as cotton but it also has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. This is perfect for new born babies who are susceptible to rashes and infections.

Bamboo is also great at removing moisture and is also thermal dynamic so it can trap heat to keep baby warm but also allow air to penetrate the fabric which allows the skin to breathe.

And as bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on earth it is easily sustainable. Bamboo is a grass so requires no chemicals or overly fertile land to grow and can be harvested and completely replaced in weeks.

So for new parents looking to find eco-friendly products for babies that actually benefit your child and the environment then you should look to bamboo baby clothes and while you are at it, why not get yourself a bamboo sweatshirt as it is not just baby that deserves pampering.

Harmful Chemicals In Baby Care Products - What's Safe?

Have you heard about all the harmful chemicals in everyday baby products?

Children today face increasing obstacles to healthy development, including rising incidence of premature birth; male genital defects; learning, attention and emotional disturbances; early puberty; obesity; and low sperm quality.

A recent report, "Growing Up Toxic" by the Environment California Research and Policy Center, confirmed findings that chemical exposures are the primary cause for increased disabilities and disease. The only good news is that YOU can protect your child from many of these chemicals, armed with knowledge and the commitment to buy smart.

Headlines are screaming about bisphenol A (BPA), a noxious chemical used in many plastic containers including baby bottles, water bottles, sippy cups and other containers used for food and beverages. Much of the recent clamor occurred after publication of a recent study, Baby's Toxic Bottle: Bisphenol A Leaching from Popular Brands of Baby Bottles.

The study, commissioned by Environmental Health groups in the U.S. and Canada, has resulted in calls for bans on BPA, an environmental estrogen, since it is known to leach out of the plastics and has been implicated in development and reproductive health risks.

Dr. David Carpenter, a professor of environmental health sciences at the State University of New York at Albany School of Public Health, said that BPA taken into the body before birth or in early years of life can alter the ratio of sex hormones and affect development.

"It's absolutely obscene to use a substance that can make little boys less masculine and opens the chance that little girls will go on to develop breast cancer," he said at the teleconference.

The BPA studies call for a ban on the use of BPA following action by the State of California to ban the use of phthalates and other known cancer causing ingredients in products designed for children. Phthalates (pronounced thah-lates) are used to make plastic 'soft' and is found in toys, teething rings, some bottles and other play things that children often handle or put into their mouths. The California legislation is leading other states to begin regulation on known carcinogens, hormone disruptors, neurotoxins, but the road to success is rocky and very long.

Early 2008, another study found elevated levels of phthalates found in the urine of babies who'd been recently shampooed, powdered or lotioned with commonly used, commercial baby products. These reports, along with a myriad of other recent studies, are contributing to real concern and outrage on the part of parents across the nation.

When the very products that are designed to encourage good parenting become a threat to good health, it creates worry and distress. It also points to the need for parents to become vigilant consumers who learn to read labels, follow new studies as they are published and begin to demand safe, clean products for their children.

One of the first and most controllable items that a parent can focus on are the skin and body care products they expose their child to each day. And, no, I'm not talking just about the baby care products. I am including all the items adults use to bathe or shower, brush their teeth, plus deodorant, lotion, makeup, nail polish and products that clean / freshen the home. READ the labels on your product containers and remember that the average American comes into contact with over 200 toxic chemicals just getting ready for work in the morning! If you put it on your own body and then pick up your child to quiet their sobs, it's safe to assume your child is getting exposed to the same 200 chemicals that you just slathered over your own body.

So, how do you get started?

Just take one step at a time. READ labels and try to limit the number of toxins in each product. I've listed the most worrisome below - clip the list and take it with you when you are shopping. Remember that if a product has 5 or 6 ingredients that are on the list - or only 1 ingredient on the list, that should be reason enough to look for a safer product.

Red Flag Ingredients (toxic synthetic chemicals) to Avoid:

· Alcohol, Isopropyl (SD-40)

· Benzoyl Peroxide

· DEA (Diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), & TEA (Triethanolamine) · Dioxin

· DMDM Hydantoin & Urea (Imidazolidinyl)

· FD&C Color Pigments

· Fragrances

· Parabens

· PEG (Polyethylene glycol)

· Phthalates

· Propylene Glycol (PG) and Butylene Glycol

· Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

· Triclosan

· Sunscreen ingredients like benzophenone, avebenzone, methyoxycinnamates, paba, etc.

I recommend that you take the time to find the best natural, certified organic and/or wild crafted formulations. Look for certifications like: Certified ToxicFree® Product Seal, the EcoCert Seal or the USDA Certified Organic Seal.

These seals are indications that a third party has examined the formulations and judged them according to their safety standards. I believe that you have a 'Right to Know' that what is in products will not harm you or your baby! Feeling assured that the products you purchase are free from xeno-estrogens, carcinogens and other known toxic ingredients is important when you are buying for you and your baby.

Baby Products to Make Your Baby Healthy

Babies are sensitive and vulnerable cuddly individuals. They will always need enough attention and care for them to have a satisfying life. You must make sure that you give them their needs or else they will cry a lot. You as a mother will be responsible to do that. Try to make sure that you take full responsibility of him. Consider your child as a gift that you must treasure and can give you overwhelming satisfaction and happiness. Raising kids up is never easy so you must prepare yourself for that heavy task.

You have to make sure that your baby gets the best possible care and attention. When buying the needed products and goods for your baby, try to make sure that you get the best product available. If you find them expensive, try to settle for the best within the price range that you have set. Always remember that all the products that you will buy will have a direct effect on your baby's condition.

There are various products that can cause local irritations in the skin. This happens when the skin is not compatible with some of the contents of the products. You have to remember that this does not mean the those products that can cause rashes to your baby are already unsafe to use for other babies. It could be that your baby's skin is just different from that of others.

If ever baby products cause irritation and rashes to your babies skin, you are always free to visit your physician and ask for some advice on this matter. You must not continue using these products because it may lead to serious problems later on. Always try to consider products which are purely natural and have been proven to be safe for sensitive skin.

Always remember that your baby is helpless and always depends on you for everything that he needs. Try to respond on his signals immediately. It is not only the nutrition of the baby that is important. You have to make sure that you do all the things that need to be done for him that will make him more healthy and well.

You must remember that your baby need enough rest for him to grow healthy and well. You have to make sure that he gets enough sleep everyday so that he will have enough stamina for all the activities whenever he is awake. Always make sure that you only use comfortable bedding for their cribs for them to have good rest and sleep.

You have to choose the appropriate products for your babies. In choosing bathing essentials like shampoo and soap, you have to make sure that they are safe for the babies. Some of these products contain harmful chemicals so you must be careful. You always have to make sure that all the products that you use are safe and will be good for him.

How Are Organic Baby Skin Care Products Different?

Everyone has their own ideas about what is best for their baby which is one of the reasons the new organic trend is now being seen with baby skin care products. A growing number of individuals believe natural products are vital for a healthy happy baby and that natural is the only way to go. There are definite benefits to using natural or organic products which are made from ingredients that come straight from the earth including plants and oils. No chemicals are used and the products are prepared and preserved with altering the natural integrity of the ingredients.

Plants have for years been used by naturalists as well as mainstream medicine for their beneficial properties. Each plant produces oil that can be extracted and used to improve our bodies and minds. A few of the ingredients found in organic are as follows:

1. Chamomile is known to be a natural anti-allergen, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic therefore it is effective for healing and soothing the skin. Certain varieties are also known to have a calming effect.

2. Lavender is world renowned for its healing properties, in particular its ability to promote cell regeneration. It is also a powerful antiseptic, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. Lavender when inhaled is also known to calm and promote restful sleeps.

3. Calendula, know to most as the marigold is a potent anti-bacterial, anti-viral and an anti-inflammatory, it is very efficient in treatment of cuts, abrasions and diaper rashes.

4. Jojoba which is said to be very similar to the skin's naturally produced sebum is an excellent lubricant, moisturizer, and skin protectant.

5. Aloe Vera is widely recognized for its healing properties because of its ability to accelerate cell growth and pain relieving properties. Aloe Vera is also absorbed by the skin four times faster than water so it is beneficial as a carrier ingredient.

A baby's skin is very delicate which makes organic skin care products a desirable choice for many because they do not contain chemicals and therefore a skin reaction is less likely. Mainstream products use surfactants to essentially produce the foaming action however surfactants are also proven to be skin irritants. Skin reactions can cause a burning, itching, or rash and can also progress into a skin infection if an irritant is used over a prolonged period. If you suspect this is the case see your Doctor or health nurse for assistance.

The variety and selection of organic skin care products has exploded in recent years. A few of these products include shampoo, lotion, soaps and body wash, diaper rash treatment, laundry detergent, and teething medication. Ultimately any product that touches your baby's skin can be found in the organic baby skin care section.

Not everyone will buy organic skin care products for there newborn this is all a personal choice. The main goal however remains the same and that is to purchasing skin care products which are free of harsh ingredients including perfumes and alcohols. Always seek out the blandest and gentlest products that you can find because their skin is five times as thin and the harsh chemicals found in products aimed at adults can cause severe irritation.

Organic Baby Skin Care Products

Many parents are realizing just how important it is that their children eat a well-balanced and healthy diet. Along with eating, the right kinds of foods these parents are now starting to realize the important of caring for their child's skin as well. So a large number of now preferring to buy natural organic baby skin care products rather than using the more commercial brands.

It is important to remember that a child's skin is extremely sensitive and for those who suffer from skin conditions including eczema may find normal skin care products make the problem much worse. It is the additives and chemicals in these products which not only cause a child's skin to dry out but which can make a skin condition they already have much worse.

Although you can purchase natural organic baby skin, care products today a large number of parents are preferring to make their own. This is because such products are quick and easy to produce. All one needs to do is get the right sorts of ingredients and then mix them together.

However, although most can be mixed together quickly and easily there are some that may require cooking before they can be used. Yet one does not need to have any specific culinary skills in order to do this. Many homemade products that one can make for use on a babies skin cannot only be applied directly to the skin but also eaten by the child as well.

The reason many parents prefer to make their own rather than buy natural skin care products for their baby as it will save them money. Also once made as long as the product is kept in a sealed container and refrigerated they can last for several months. Below we look at a couple of the kinds of products that one can make in order to look after your baby's skin properly.

If you are parent who uses talcum powder on their child then why not make your own rather than using those that you can buy in your local grocery or drugstore. A good one contains 1 cup of arrowroot powder, 1 tablespoon of dried ground chamomile and 1 tablespoon of dried lavender. Once mixed together this can then be applied to the child's skin and will not only keep the skin dry but also prevent bacteria from growing.

Although there are plenty of baby shampoos available, there are some that contain ingredients that can be harmful to your baby's system. If you really want to care for your baby's hair and scalp then prepare your own shampoos instead. To make a rosemary one you will need a bunch of fresh rosemary, 4.5 fluid ounces of unscented baby shampoo, pint of distilled water and four drops of Rosemary essential oil.

As well as the natural organic baby skin care products that we have mentioned above which you can make. There are plenty of others that you may want to consider making for yourself. A quick search of the internet and you will find plenty of different skin care product recipes that you can make using only natural organic ingredients.

How to Find the Best Baby Products

When expecting a baby, you not only want to get the things that the baby needs, but you want them to be the best baby products available if possible. Quality is important for a number of reasons such as safety and durability. If it is your first baby, you may not even be sure what it is you really need. Once you begin your search you will realize that there is an endless supply of baby products on the market. Trying to decide between all of the different products and brands can be very daunting, but don't give up, your child needs the best you can find. Don't let yourself get overwhelmed as you begin shopping because there are books, online directories, friends and relatives who can help direct you to the best baby products.

Many stores help the inexperienced shopper look for the best baby products when they register for a baby shower. Shower registries are similar to those for wedding showers. You have a whole list of things to choose from, put them on your personalized registry list, let people know you are registered, and then Voila! The nice thing about a baby gift registry is that it gives you ideas as to what you need for your baby, so even if you are not registering for gifts, you can check out the information provided at the registry and see what some of the best baby products listed are so you can purchase them.

There are certain items that your baby absolutely cannot do without. Your baby will need a place to sleep, so a baby crib is a must. You can check online reviews or even Consumer Reports as you search for one, but the main thing to remember is that it needs to meet all safety regulations. Other than that, the style and brand are a matter of personal choice. Diapers are something no baby can get along without either. You should check out reviews on different brands - nobody wants to hold a baby with a leaky diaper, so make sure that inexpensive doesn't equal cheap when looking for the best baby products as far as diapers go.

Other essentials such as baby bottles, baby food, and baby formula will be needed as well. If you lead an active lifestyle, you will want to make a good selection when looking at strollers. The variety here is tremendous, so you may need to do some research to find the best baby products that fit your lifestyle. Baby monitors, bouncer seats and swings are also great baby products and there are varying degrees of quality depending on how much you can spend. Once the baby is a little older, gates and electrical outlet plugs will be the items you will need. These are just some of many ways to find the best baby products for your baby.

Gap, Mattel, Speedo, Wal-Mart Products Linked to Child P1

Charles Kernaghan executive director of the National Labor Committee, discusses recent scandals linking children's products to sweatshop labor. National Labor Committee recently found forced labor of up to 90 hours a week and pay as low as 46 cents an hour in Chinese factories linked to Mateel. The clothing company the Gap has announced its cut ties with a subcontractor found to be holding children in slave-like conditions in India to make clothing sold by Gap Kids. The London Observer revealed Sunday that children as young as ten years old have been subjected to work long hours without pay and regular threats and beatings. Gap began auditing its labor conditions in 2004, years after reports of abusive conditions at its factories first emerged. The Gap expose is only the latest scandal linking children's products to sweatshop labor. Earlier this year the toy giant Mattel recalled some 21 million China-made toys found to contain lead paint easily swallowed by children. Last week the National Labor Committee in Support of Human and Worker Rights released three reports documenting the conditions for workers making those toys. The reports found forced labor of up to 90 hours a week and pay as low as 46 cents an hour. Aside from Mattel, other companies using the factories include Wal-Mart, McDonalds and the swimwear manufacturer Speedo. Charles Kernaghan is the executive director of the National Labor Committee, widely considered this country's leading voice in exposing the ...

The Truth About Baby Products

Babies are helpless little creatures entirely dependent on us to give them the best care we possibly can. There is a wealth of information available to mums about feeding and parenting but when it comes to baby toiletries there is little information given and a bewildering range of products to choose from.

It used to be thought that cosmetics did not penetrate the skin and there was consequently no regulations about what manufacturers put into their products. Adult human skin is thought to absorb 60% of everything it comes into contact with and baby's skin is about six times thinner and five times more sensitive. Yet when you read the list of ingredients listed on baby products they look much the same as those listed on standard family toiletries. Furthermore there is no independent assessment on the safety of chemical substances used even though there are rising levels of concern about potential harmful effects on both health and the environment. Manufacturers are not required to prove ingredients to be safe. At present 99% of the substances that have been used for years are only tested by the manufacturers. Only if an ingredient is proved to be unsafe is it withdrawn.

Look at the chemicals listed in your child's toiletry products commonly SLS or sodium lauryl sulfate is used in baby wipes and shampoo's it has been linked to skin irritations, diarrhoea, breathing problems and eye damage particularly in small children. In higher concentrations this same chemical is used in household cleaning products. When combined with other ingredients it can form nitrosamines which are carcinogenic. Propylene Glycol this is a surfactant or wetting agent and an active component in anti freeze! Diethanolamine(DEA) Triethanolamine(TEA) and Monoethanolamine(MEA) commonly found in children's bubble baths combined with nitrosamines they can become carcinogenic. These chemicals have been outlawed in some countries but are widely available in the U.K. There are many many more chemicals such as these and probably the best way of avoiding them is to choose pure and natural toiletries for babies and question which products you actually need at all. Advertisers would like us to think that to be good parents we should cover our babies in lotions and potions from the day they are born but why expose your child to a cocktail of detergents, preservatives, colourants and fragrances. Avoid products containing potentially irritating or harmful ingredients. Remember young babies are unable to tell you if they are itching so watch for red patches, rash or flaking skin. Above all keep what you use simple and to a minimum.

Nourish Your Baby's Skin With the Purest Products

Your baby is fragile when he or she is small and growing, and so using the best possible products on your baby's skin is vitally important. The best way for you to nourish your baby's skin is using the purest products around, as these are the products that will provide the greatest benefits without drawbacks like chemicals or potential allergic reactions. Here is what you need to know about nourishing your baby's skin from head to toe with the help of the purest skin care products that the market has to offer..

The skin on your baby is his or her largest organ and also one of the most vitally important. Skin has a porous nature, and so your baby's skin is going to absorb whatever you rub onto it, allowing it to enter into the blood stream. Some baby care products such as baby powder are also capable of being ingested or inhaled by your baby. Because there are so many different ingredients found within baby creams, lotions, shampoos, powders, soaps, oils and ointments, it is vitally important that you choose the purest possible products and know which products contain potential toxins so that they can be avoided.

Unfortunately, many toxic ingredients do not have to be included on labels and so it can be rather challenging for you to determine just what chemicals are being rubbed onto your baby. For example, many types of skin care products use Phthalates, but infants are significantly vulnerable to developmental toxicity and reproductive toxicity from phthalates because their metabolic system is so immature. Anything that includes a fragrance as an ingredient, or that clearly states phthalates on the ingredients list should absolutely be avoided when it comes to the health of your baby.

Many skin care and bath products are also unfortunately contaminated using formaldehyde or 1.4-dioxane, and these are chemicals that have been linked to skin allergies as well as cancer.

Before you apply any ointments, creams, shampoos or other products to your baby's skin, it is vitally important that you figure out just what ingredients you are potentially introducing into your baby's blood stream. Luckily, there are a number of companies on the market now that are working to produce completely natural, pure and organic products for skin care and bath and body, not only for babies but for all ages.

One example of a company that is doing the right thing is Earth Mama Angel Baby, which makes a truly wonderful line of completely 100% natural and certified organic products for baby that use only natural materials with no parabens, no phthalates, no artificial preservatives, no dyes and no fragrances in any of the products. This is a truly impressive line of products, and potentially the purest products that you can use on your baby.

There are rubber coated spoons that are made just for your little ones gums. You will also get him/her their own small bowls. The Goodness of Natural Baby Products

It is not uncommon for parents these days to rely upon the most commonly available baby products or those that come with the label of a renowned manufacturer. But are they really beneficial for your baby, in terms of safety and well being?

A common occurrence is that of a dermatitis condition commonly prevalent in infants by the name of cradle cap which causes itching and blemishes and spots on the scalp. For all you know, this may be due to a reaction to a certain kind of product which essentially entails artificial ingredients. Resorting to natural ingredients for external and internal use of babies can substantially reduce the risk of such condition which can be a major worry for the parents and not to mention the discomfort that the baby goes through.

Also, babies can also be allergic to lots of soaps and lotions due to their chemical combination which may not be suitable for certain babies. Skin conditions and allergic reactions of such artificial products may lead to dryness, redness and swelling in skin and wrinkles, particularly in winters.

This can best be obviated by relying and sticking with natural ingredients and products, originating from organic products with natural goodness and qualities. The natural products have their own distinct smell and sweetness which is invariably appreciated and liked by both the parents and the babies.

Some of the common natural ingredients used in baby products include coconut and sunflower oils, soy protein, vegetable glycerin, vanilla extract, clove oil, buttermilk, honey and aloe vera which, amongst other benefits, keeps the skin healthy, shiny, wrinkle free, fragrant and safe from allergies and adverse reactions.

Natural Treatment of Baby Eczema - Fewer Bath Products and Better Nutrition May Be the Answer

What causes baby eczema?

According to the National Institutes of Health, eczema affects up to 20% of infants and children in the United States. The rate of eczema has been rising for years, and is highest in industrialized countries. Hundreds of studies have been undertaken, linking eczema to food allergies, atopy (a triad of conditions including allergy, asthma and eczema), heredity (a child is more likely to get eczema if a parent has an atopic condition), household income (the rate of eczema seems to increase with higher income), houses that are too clean (the "hygiene hypothesis"), houses that are too dirty (dust mite allergy), urban upbringing vs. rural upbringing (kids who grow up on farms have the lowest rates of all atopic conditions)... the list goes on and on.

As eczema is a sign of an underlying condition and not an illness, the answer is probably "all of the above." Eczema can be triggered by food allergies, by contact allergies (contact with irritating substances), by nutritional deficiencies, and as a side effect of other diseases like insulin resistance and diabetes. The eczema trigger is different for each person--and may depend a lot on genetics.

The nutrition hypothesis

The nutritional value of the food we eat has changed dramatically over the past several decades. "Factory farming," where fields are sown with the same vegetables year after year, fertilized with petroleum by-products and sprayed heavily with herbicides and insecticides, has reduced levels of key vitamins and minerals in vegetables. Meat and dairy animals are raised on huge feedlots, fed an unnatural diet of grain and animal by-products, and heavily dosed with antibiotics to keep them alive long enough to slaughter.

Eczema is strongly connected with nutrient deficiency, so it's not surprising that a decline in the nutritional value of food would coincide with an increase in rates of eczema.

Early bathing may irritate newborn skin

Bathing routines and products we take for granted may interfere with the development of healthy infant skin. Babies are born with sterile skin, which is covered by a thick, creamy substance called vernix caseosa. Vernix has antimicrobial and antifungal properties that protect the baby's skin in the womb and after birth, when the baby first comes into contact with bacteria in the outside world. World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for newborn care specify that, to protect the baby, vernix should not be removed for at least six hours. Unfortunately, in modern societies this protective substance is immediately washed off in the hospital, leaving the baby's skin vulnerable to colonization by bacteria and fungi.

Newborn skin is very thin and loses moisture rapidly. It takes a few weeks for infant skin to develop the "acid mantle," a slightly acidic (pH about 5.5) mixture of sebum, sweat and "friendly" bacteria. (By adulthood, skin may be colonized by nearly two hundred different species of bacteria.) Ideally, over the first few weeks of life, a baby's skin is colonized by beneficial bacteria picked up from close contact with the mother and family. These bacteria perform an important function: they keep skin healthy by preventing colonization by disease-causing microorganisms. If this important step is compromised, skin can be colonized by harmful bacteria. The skin of people with eczema tends to carry a high concentration of Staphylococcus aureus, bacteria which cause skin infections, pneumonia, and even MRSA.

Excessive bathing, soap, and moisturizer use can interfere with development of healthy skin

Infant skin will naturally develop a healthy acid mantle and strong immune defenses if it's allowed to. But again, bathing routines and products we take for granted, including soaps and moisturizing lotions, can interfere with this process.

Infant skin is so delicate that even exposure to plain water disturbs it enough to dry it out. Soap accelerates this process by raising the skin's pH and removing beneficial oils, resulting in impaired skin protection for hours after bathing.

Fragrance and preservative chemicals in soaps and moisturizers irritate skin further, and can actually affect the way skin develops. What's worse, these chemicals can be absorbed through an infant's skin into the bloodstream, potentially affecting the baby's developing hormonal system.

A healthier way to care for infant skin

Babies' skin doesn't get very dirty for the first few weeks of life, so generally the less it's interfered with, the healthier it will be. Adding a half-teaspoon of lemon juice--to reduce the water's pH and add skin-friendly ascorbic acid--and a teaspoon of sunflower or safflower oil to the bathwater will keep baby clean without harming skin. If a moisturizer is needed, use a fragrance free baby oil containing sunflower or safflower oil, which are excellent moisturizers and have the added benefit of helping to prevent bacterial skin infections.

If your baby's skin does become irritated, bathing with Epsom salts or Dead Sea salts is a safe and clinically proven way to soothe irritated skin. (Epsom salts are not salt at all, but magnesium sulfate, a natural mineral effective for soothing inflamed skin. Dead Sea salts are evaporated mineral salts from the Dead Sea in Israel.)

Some magnesium in an Epsom salts bath is absorbed through the skin and is a safe way to supplement this important mineral, while Dead Sea salts provide a whole range of vitamins and minerals essential for healthy skin, including magnesium, zinc, potassium, copper, and B vitamins. A teaspoon of bath salts is plenty for an infant bath.

For older kids and for gentle cleansing when soap is required, try a natural bar soap or highly diluted castile soap, like Dr. Bronner's.

Nutrition and healthy infant skin

Nutritional factors affect how a baby's skin develops, too. Deficiencies of zinc or magnesium are fairly common and cause symptoms which are indistinguishable from other types of eczema. A deficiency of vitamin B6 may result in seborrheic dermatitis, or cradle cap.

Baby eczema may be a sign of zinc or magnesium deficiency

When a breast-fed baby develops eczema, the mother's diet is often suspected as the cause. However, the eczema may have nothing to do with food allergy. Breast milk is often low in zinc, and a sign of zinc deficiency is dry, irritated skin. Recent studies suggest that zinc deficiency may be much more common than previously suspected. Low levels of magnesium may also cause eczema-like symptoms by raising the level of histamine in the blood and making the body more sensitive to allergens.

A simple blood test can identify a zinc or magnesium deficiency, and supplementing with the missing mineral may solve the problem. A special kind of zinc can also be applied as a topical cream for absorption through the skin. Caregivers should talk to their pediatrician about correct dosing before giving a baby a vitamin supplement.

Formula-fed babies may also be deficient in vitamins or in essential fatty acids (EFAs)-fats which are essential to healthy development of the brain, nervous system and skin. Some babies may not be able to utilize the vitamins and fats in baby formula, or the formula itself may not provide enough of them. A doctor or knowledgeable nutritionist can help caregivers choose a more appropriate formula or supplement with the necessary vitamins and essential fatty acids-especially zinc, magnesium, and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a type of EFA.

Food allergies and eczema

About 30% of infants and children with eczema test do positive for food allergies. A baby or child has a much greater chance of developing food allergies if either of the parents have allergies themselves. The most common allergens include cow's milk, soy, egg, wheat, peanuts and shellfish. In breastfed babies, allergens from foods may pass directly to the child through breast milk. Avoiding these foods while breastfeeding may keep the child from developing eczema or other allergic reactions. The La Leche League website has an excellent page on allergies and breastfeeding.

In formula-fed babies, changing the formula may eliminate the problem. Special, easy-to-digest hydrolyzed formulas (formulas where the proteins are partially broken down) are often recommended for formula-fed babies with food allergies. Adding probiotics or prebiotics--beneficial bacteria that live in the gut and help digest food--to infant diets helps to reduce or prevent both food allergies and other illnesses and has been shown to help relieve eczema, too.

Breastfeeding longer, introducing solid foods late (after 6 months), introducing new foods one at a time, and waiting to introduce allergenic foods until after the baby is about a year old help reduce the risk of allergic reactions. Most babies outgrow early allergies to milk and eggs, although peanut allergy is more likely to persist to adulthood. However, children with food allergies are more likely to develop asthma or other atopic diseases when they grow older. Caregivers should talk to their pediatrician if they suspect a food allergy. A food elimination diet should only be utilized under a doctor's supervision, to limit the risk of nutrient deficiency.

Steroid creams and ointments commonly prescribed for eczema can cause adrenal damage in infants and children

Steroid creams and ointments are the most commonly prescribed treatment for eczema, but can have dangerous side effects, especially for infants. Steroids are easily absorbed through the skin, and children can absorb a high percentage of the drugs because their skin is thin and they have more skin in relation to their body size. Even short courses of treatment with steroids can cause damage to the adrenal glands, which regulate the body's hormones.

Steroids work by interfering with the chemicals the body uses to signal inflammation. They turn off the inflammation response and cause tiny blood vessels called capillaries to constrict, reducing redness and swelling. Topical steroids also suppress the body's immune system and can lead to an increased susceptibility to fungal or bacterial infections of the skin.

Before using a steroid medicine, caregivers should work with a pediatrician to see if the baby's skin condition is caused by a nutritional deficiency, a food allergy, or irritation from soaps or moisturizers. Treating the root cause, rather than the symptom, of eczema will start a baby on the road to a lifetime of healthy skin. What causes baby eczema?

Welcome To My Kitchen - Alternative Natural Body Products

www.hebrewbaby.weebly.com Making alternative body products in my home is something that I've tried to remain committed to for the last couple of years. Although toxins are everywhere...in the water, the soil, the food, the air, and just about all the household products and furniture we have in our homes, I believe it's still important for each of us to do whatever we can do reduce the amount of toxicity that circulates throughout our bodies. Unfortunately, even in most health food stores chemicals abound due to the solvents that are used during the processing of the foods and products. Most of the recipes used in this video are recommended by Hulda Regehr Clark in her book "The Cure for All Disease". She has a listing in the back of her book with reliable "chemical-free" companies that you can purchase everything from herbs, to household products, etc. At the end of the day, I'd have to agree with her recommendations of living with as little as possible...because with everything we bring into our homes, we bring along the chemicals they carry as well. Shalom Family!

The Best Product to Sell on eBay - Top 5 Products to Sell on eBay

O.K. lets face it! The best product to sell online would be iPod, iPhone, Motorola phones, PS3, Xbox 360 and the list goes on, but the problem is that you cannot find those products at a real wholesale price. However, there are still other best products to sell on eBay you just need to know where to find them!

There are a lot of free eBay resources that people do not know about! These resources will actually show you "hot list" of products that are currently selling online. To be honest, I did not know about a lot of them until about 6 months into my business. My research consisted of looking up what had the most bids and I would just start my search for those products! Not really a research but I thought if it was selling than that product was the best to sell on eBay.

Basically what you need to find are the products people are searching for and it does not matter what brand they are. The brand only matters to the person searching for it, so already you will have a good chance of selling that product! The best product to sell on eBay is a niche product you would never think of. And by niche I mean the people searching for it! To define a niche is to look at it as specialty. Lets say you wanted to sell baby products, you would want to narrow it down to baby stroller and the brand of that particular stroller.

Of course when you find what products are selling you need to find the real wholesalers for those products. The shopping type mall settings for wholesalers do not work. If a company promises to have all the products in one warehouse, most likely they are the middleman.
