Bedtime Without Struggling

Bedtime should be a calm and pleasant experience for all concerned. Bath, supper, story then sleep. Routines are not always that simple, screaming can almost always feature somewhere in that list! Following this simple list should hopefully ease your sleep problems at night and every member of the household can have a relaxing peaceful nights sleep.

1. A child's bedtime is at the worst possible time of the day. You are tired from work or looking after the children and the home. If you are tired, you are more likely to become stressed and angry if you child is not wanting to go to sleep easily. Try and stay relaxed and give yourself a time out during the day, hopefully this will give you enough energy to see through bedtime.

2. Try and cooperate with your partner where possible at the children's bedtimes. This can be fun for all of you and be less stressful if it is difficult.

3. Have a calm bedtime by having a wind down time well before the child actually goes to bed. Try not to over stimulate the child by giving noisy toys or watching too much television.

4. Do not expect your child to just go to bed when you say so. Give your child fair warning of when bedtime will be. Show the child on a clock when bedtime will be, this is will increase the child's sense of time.

5. Let the child have some control over bedtime. Giving the child a choice of bedtime stories and toy to take to bed with them. Choices will empower the child and could make them calmer and feel more in control.

6. Create a routine and stick to it every night, no exceptions. Let the child release some energy playing in a bath, give the child some supper before bed but not too much liquid as it may disturb the child getting up when needing the toilet. Let the child choose a story to read and then calmly go to sleep.

7. Create a secure atmosphere for your child at bedtime. Talk to your child about what they love and what they dislike. You could include in your routine, getting the child to tell you about what they have done that day and possibly what they would like to do the next day.

8. Try and find out what is stopping your child going to sleep calmly. There is usually an underlying reason. What does your child eat before going to bed. If they are eating lots of additives and sweet things, you will need to cut these out of your child diet. Are they drinking too much and needing to go to the toilet often? Is your child scared of the dark? If so let the child choose a night light and let the child turn it on and off when they want. Is something upsetting your child? Have a chat with your child so they can express their feelings. If you cut out certain things you can usually find out what is stopping your child from going to sleep.

The Truth About Baby Products

Babies are helpless little creatures entirely dependent on us to give them the best care we possibly can. There is a wealth of information available to mums about feeding and parenting but when it comes to baby toiletries there is little information given and a bewildering range of products to choose from.

It used to be thought that cosmetics did not penetrate the skin and there was consequently no regulations about what manufacturers put into their products. Adult human skin is thought to absorb 60% of everything it comes into contact with and baby's skin is about six times thinner and five times more sensitive. Yet when you read the list of ingredients listed on baby products they look much the same as those listed on standard family toiletries. Furthermore there is no independent assessment on the safety of chemical substances used even though there are rising levels of concern about potential harmful effects on both health and the environment. Manufacturers are not required to prove ingredients to be safe. At present 99% of the substances that have been used for years are only tested by the manufacturers. Only if an ingredient is proved to be unsafe is it withdrawn.

Look at the chemicals listed in your child's toiletry products commonly SLS or sodium lauryl sulfate is used in baby wipes and shampoo's it has been linked to skin irritations, diarrhoea, breathing problems and eye damage particularly in small children. In higher concentrations this same chemical is used in household cleaning products. When combined with other ingredients it can form nitrosamines which are carcinogenic. Propylene Glycol this is a surfactant or wetting agent and an active component in anti freeze! Diethanolamine(DEA) Triethanolamine(TEA) and Monoethanolamine(MEA) commonly found in children's bubble baths combined with nitrosamines they can become carcinogenic. These chemicals have been outlawed in some countries but are widely available in the U.K. There are many many more chemicals such as these and probably the best way of avoiding them is to choose pure and natural toiletries for babies and question which products you actually need at all. Advertisers would like us to think that to be good parents we should cover our babies in lotions and potions from the day they are born but why expose your child to a cocktail of detergents, preservatives, colourants and fragrances. Avoid products containing potentially irritating or harmful ingredients. Remember young babies are unable to tell you if they are itching so watch for red patches, rash or flaking skin. Above all keep what you use simple and to a minimum.

Using Organic Baby Mattresses to Eliminate Phthalates and BPA

Did you know that babies are exposed to 100 chemicals even before being born? According to a recent study done by the Environmental Working Group, not even the womb is safe for a baby. The study, which tested cord blood from 10 minority newborns, found that nine out of these 10 babies were exposed to Bisphenol A (BPA) and perchlorate during pregnancy. Additionally, such babies are exposed to additional chemicals during their first year, including PBDE's and phthalates from even basic baby products like bottles, mattresses, and toys. As all parents want to have healthy children, what are some options for eliminating such harmful chemicals from a baby's environment?

During pregnancy, the best way to reduce BPA in a baby's environment is to reduce canned foods and those heated in a microwave with plastic. While this won't completely eliminate BPA, it reduces it, especially as both canned foods and microwaveable plastic can have significant levels of BPA inside. Once the baby is born, BPA-free baby products, such as baby bottles, reduce exposure to this chemical. If you have to use a bottle instead of breastfeeding, powdered formula is a better choice instead of canned for reducing BPA.

What about other baby products? The two most common baby products that can be laden with chemicals are mattresses and toys. Both of these often contain materials like plastic and cloth, which indicates that a combination of PVC, phthalates, and fire-retardant chemicals may be lurking in seemingly-innocuous baby items. Aside from reading tags, the most effective route is the natural or organic one. Organic baby mattresses, for example, are made without PVC, a plastic commonly softened with phthalates, and domestic cotton, which, by itself, contains several chemicals. Baby toys, additionally, are carried by natural and organic baby product manufacturers, and these are often made fro, organic cotton, unfinished wood, and natural dyes.

Manufacturers of organic baby mattresses often carry products that are free from chemicals, so that putting together a chemical-free nursery is often a possibility. As far as other products are concerned, the 2008 Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act has set limits on lead and phthalates in many products, including toys.

Ideas For a Baby Gift Basket

One of the happiest times in a woman's life is when her sister or friend announces that they are having a baby. You are extremely excited and can hardly contain yourself, so you go shopping! You go shopping for a baby shower gift. Shopping for baby things, especially when you're not the parent, can be such an exciting outing. Everything is so adorable and cute. And can you believe they can make some of that stuff so small? It's almost as fascinating as going to the Museum of Science and Industry, for me at, least.

You go down each aisle one by one taking in vastness of the selection you have to choose from. After closely examining, comparing, and playing with a few dozen different items, you realize that it is going to be much harder to choose a gift than you first thought. Or is it? Do you really only need to get only 1 item? Have you considered putting together a variety of items and making a baby gift basket?

Baby gift baskets are themed baskets that are filled with a collection of items specifically for a baby. New parents will most assuredly enjoy the variety of items and bask in the fact that you went out of your way to personally select each and every item. Sure you could buy a premade baby gift basket, but why when making one yourself is less expansive and more fun!

The amount of different items you can choose from is virtually endless. Here's a short list of things to give you a few ideas for when you're ready to go out shopping to get the items for yours.

Nursery room accessories such as mobiles, nursery rhyme cd's, night lights, amongst other things are great for gift baskets. The new baby, and the parents need these types of items to help calm and soothe themselves. A mobile and other crib items help the baby's develop their color and shape recognition as well.

Baby bottles, pacifiers, teething rings, spoons and small stuffed toys are pretty much a must for every baby and basket. There are so many different varieties of each, you could make a basket of just these items and the parents wouldn't quibble.

Baby bath products like a bath mat, shampoo, powder, tub toys. Still all necessary and will always be needed and welcomed. Don't forget wipes and diapers. We all know there will be a time when they are in short supply.

Clothes, clothes, and more clothes. A new mother can never have too many outfits for their new baby.

Other possibilities are announcement cards. They would surely be unexpected and be a great surprise. And what parent doesn't take a million pictures? A few small picture frames would also be perfect additions.

I could go on and on with different items you could choose from to use to make your baby gift basket. Make your selections carefully. If you are unsure about a color or size or anything at all, don't be afraid to ask one of the parents. But most of all, make it yours and have fun. The joy you put into making it will flow out when it is received.

Gift and Toy Ideas For Babies

Shopping for gift and toy ideas for babies can be a challenging experience. The reason is that it can be difficult to find just the right toys that are fun for the baby, reasonably priced for you, and safe for the child. In addition, you must take into account the particular thoughts and interests of the mother. Of course, if you are the mom or dad of the newborn, the former is not an issue for you.

One thing that makes finding good gift and toy ideas for babies so difficult is that opinions vary greatly on what is considered a good baby gift. Some people will suggest giving kids clothes and diapers whereas others feel the toy should be more creative focused on some early learning and less redundant. In this malaise, many consumers can find themselves trapped in trying to figure out what to get their child. With this thought in mind, we will offer you some tips to help make this process easier.

1. Read reviews for specific products and pay careful attention to any detractions.

Although no individual review should be the final word, a pattern of negative reviews can tip you off to what are the drawbacks about a certain gift or toy. Sometimes this can be something small like it uses batteries quickly or it can be something more significant; however, the key is to recognize possible issues going in and find products that have limited ones. On the other hand, a number of positive reviews is a real good sign for the toy you are looking at. This means others have found it to be a great product and this increases the odds the baby and their parents will like it too.

2. Shop online for a better range of products and prices.

One of my favorite memories growing up was going to the local toy store and seeing the toys. Although this was great at the time, it does not make the ideal shopping experience. The expansion of the internet and online retailers is great news for consumers. Now, with a simple click of the mouse you can see a wider range of products and find lower prices than in retail stores. In addition, it makes it easier to do your Christmas shopping as you can order all the items in one sitting and even bundle orders. This larger environment on the internet means you will be able to find a broader range of quality baby products rather than having to rely on a dud.

3. Our Top Gift and Toy Ideas For Babies.

Using the above two suggestions, you can help narrow your list to find some quality gift ideas. However, if time is short, we will provide you with one toy idea that has been impressing babies, parents, and friends. This toy idea is the Precious Planet Projection Mobile. This one offers a great gift idea that can help keep kids captivated while awake in the crib and even help them fall asleep. Still, its biggest benefit will be the break it gives to mom and dad. Believe me, they will thank you for it.

By following the above tips, you should be able to find some high quality gift and toy ideas for babies. Recognize that 2009 is a great year for gift buying as many retailers have scaled back pricing. The result is a number of different great products that can be had for far more reasonable pricing.

Nourish Your Baby's Skin With the Purest Products

Your baby is fragile when he or she is small and growing, and so using the best possible products on your baby's skin is vitally important. The best way for you to nourish your baby's skin is using the purest products around, as these are the products that will provide the greatest benefits without drawbacks like chemicals or potential allergic reactions. Here is what you need to know about nourishing your baby's skin from head to toe with the help of the purest skin care products that the market has to offer..

The skin on your baby is his or her largest organ and also one of the most vitally important. Skin has a porous nature, and so your baby's skin is going to absorb whatever you rub onto it, allowing it to enter into the blood stream. Some baby care products such as baby powder are also capable of being ingested or inhaled by your baby. Because there are so many different ingredients found within baby creams, lotions, shampoos, powders, soaps, oils and ointments, it is vitally important that you choose the purest possible products and know which products contain potential toxins so that they can be avoided.

Unfortunately, many toxic ingredients do not have to be included on labels and so it can be rather challenging for you to determine just what chemicals are being rubbed onto your baby. For example, many types of skin care products use Phthalates, but infants are significantly vulnerable to developmental toxicity and reproductive toxicity from phthalates because their metabolic system is so immature. Anything that includes a fragrance as an ingredient, or that clearly states phthalates on the ingredients list should absolutely be avoided when it comes to the health of your baby.

Many skin care and bath products are also unfortunately contaminated using formaldehyde or 1.4-dioxane, and these are chemicals that have been linked to skin allergies as well as cancer.

Before you apply any ointments, creams, shampoos or other products to your baby's skin, it is vitally important that you figure out just what ingredients you are potentially introducing into your baby's blood stream. Luckily, there are a number of companies on the market now that are working to produce completely natural, pure and organic products for skin care and bath and body, not only for babies but for all ages.

One example of a company that is doing the right thing is Earth Mama Angel Baby, which makes a truly wonderful line of completely 100% natural and certified organic products for baby that use only natural materials with no parabens, no phthalates, no artificial preservatives, no dyes and no fragrances in any of the products. This is a truly impressive line of products, and potentially the purest products that you can use on your baby.

10 Reasons New Mums and Babies Need Organic Skincare

If you're a new mum, then you'll probably be well aware of the fact that nearly everything you do is now centred on your baby.

Here's why you should take time out and make sure that you and your baby get the skincare you both need at this time.

1. If you're currently pregnant, you're certain to be anxious about what products and ingredients you can and can't use on your skin. You won't want to put anything on your skin that might cause problems for your baby.

2. Being pregnant takes a lot out of the body, as the main priority is the development of the baby. This means that your skin may have suffered, and you might have lost your natural shine and sparkle. Why not see how natural skincare products can make a difference to your skin and complexion?

3. After the birth you'll be spending more of your time and attention on your baby then on yourself. You might have a lot to do in the mornings or evening, and not have the time to spend on yourself like you did previously

4. Using new mum specific skin products, and especially organic ones can help to prevent or lessen the effects of stretch marks.

5. Although you're now a responsible parent, it's still a good idea to try and make time for yourself and pamper yourself once in a while. Perhaps you could come to an agreement with your partner, or a friend or relative so that they can babysit and you can have a long relaxing bath and some time to yourself occasionally.

6. Good skincare is essential for everybody, and new babies and new mums are no exception. Your baby is precious and deserves to be looked after properly.

7. You're likely to be very protective about what your baby wears, and touches so that they don't harm themselves. You wouldn't use harmful or poor quality products on your skin, so why would you on your baby?

8. Organic products are natural and not full of potentially harmful chemicals that could cause damage later on in life. Because they are made with quality ingredients they will be free from irritants and allergens that can cause people to have adverse reactions to some skincare products.

9. You'll know full well that a relaxing bath is good way to relax after a hard day, so why not treat yourself and your baby to the best possible skincare made with organic natural ingredients?

10. You want the best for your baby in all areas of life, so why not start with their skincare? You'll feed them properly and make sure that they get everything else they need, so why would you neglect their skin?

Now you know more about why natural skin care is important, perhaps now is the time to think about organic skin care products for you and your baby.

Baby Feeding Products

There are many baby feeding products out there to choose from. There is bottles, plates, bowls, silverware and cups. There are many brands you can pick out of. It is now your choice to decide what brand, style, quality and price you are looking for.

From infant on up you will find you are buying and replacing items all the time. As an infant you will purchase them bottles and will know what ones you want to purchase with your money. At age 4 months you will buy bowls and spoons; your little one will be eating baby cereal and you want them to have their own special items to eat with.

There are rubber coated spoons that are made just for your little ones gums. You will also get him/her their own small bowls. As they get older you will start buying them plates that are there size and silverware as they are learning to try and feed themselves, as well as, their own sippy cups. Your little one is learning so much and with the help of them having their own baby feeding products will help your child and is much safer than handing them a medal fork or a big plate they could hurt themselves with.

In this time you will decide what brand you prefer and will know which one is of better quality for the price you pay. You will than decide what the quality is on each of them and start to make sure when you purchase new that you get a certain brand.

Bringing Home Your Baby - What You Need to Know

The great joy of bringing home a newborn baby is something every parent can associate with. The long hours designing and building the nursery are over and the result is a safe comfortable environment for the baby to sleep and spend most of its time.

This may not be the case and most times it is not the case. With nursery renovations, materials used or how we behave in the room may never be considered. This can result in poor air quality exposing the baby to many different pollutants. Factor that along with the types of newborn baby products that can cause illness and new parents have a lot to worry about.

Consider this, during renovations you paint, put new carpeting in the room and furnish the room. Most interior paints used are latex paints, water based and easy to clean up. What you do not know is that these paints contribute Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) to the ambient air after application and can contribute VOC's for many years after.

Many of these compounds are present as a gas in the air that is respired into the lungs and many are toxic. The same can be said about the furniture we choose and the carpeting; they both can off-gas formaldehyde, a known carcinogen.

Many newborn care products that are used to clean the baby contain harmful products. Most talcum powders contain zinc stearate and magnesium silicates, as well as other silicates which are finely ground and get airborne when applied to the newborn baby. These fine powders get inhaled into the newborns lungs and can cause pneumonia and inflammation of the airways.

Additionally, a homes indoor air contains very fine particles and the same effect can result as the newborn baby breathes these particles. This is of concern because infants and children's lungs are smaller and still developing compared to adults.

When bringing home newborns or if you have young children, it is extremely important to have your home tested to determine its condition and determine what is needed to reduce potential exposures.

The Goodness of Natural Baby Products

It is not uncommon for parents these days to rely upon the most commonly available baby products or those that come with the label of a renowned manufacturer. But are they really beneficial for your baby, in terms of safety and well being?

A common occurrence is that of a dermatitis condition commonly prevalent in infants by the name of cradle cap which causes itching and blemishes and spots on the scalp. For all you know, this may be due to a reaction to a certain kind of product which essentially entails artificial ingredients. Resorting to natural ingredients for external and internal use of babies can substantially reduce the risk of such condition which can be a major worry for the parents and not to mention the discomfort that the baby goes through.

Also, babies can also be allergic to lots of soaps and lotions due to their chemical combination which may not be suitable for certain babies. Skin conditions and allergic reactions of such artificial products may lead to dryness, redness and swelling in skin and wrinkles, particularly in winters.

This can best be obviated by relying and sticking with natural ingredients and products, originating from organic products with natural goodness and qualities. The natural products have their own distinct smell and sweetness which is invariably appreciated and liked by both the parents and the babies.

Some of the common natural ingredients used in baby products include coconut and sunflower oils, soy protein, vegetable glycerin, vanilla extract, clove oil, buttermilk, honey and aloe vera which, amongst other benefits, keeps the skin healthy, shiny, wrinkle free, fragrant and safe from allergies and adverse reactions.

Shampoo Lavender and Chamomile 16 Ounces Review

Nature's Baby Organics was founded by a mother of two girls. She created the product line after both of her daughters suffered from skin allergies and eczema. When I first read about the product. Vanilla Tangerine sounded weird, but once I smelled it I was in love with the scent. It smells like an orange creamsicle. I love Shampoo/Bodywash combos, because I only like messing with one product. I love how this product felt. It is very light weight and did not leave any residue on Elianna's skin or in the sink (I still bathe her in the sink). I have really enjoyed using this product and it seems to really last a long time. It is more expensive than Johnson and Johnsons, but if your child has sensitive skin, or you prefer organic you should check this product out.

Product highlights:

* Light feeling, no residue.
* Liquid 2-in-1 Baby Shampoo and Body Wash
* Organic, Natural
* Ideal for Sensitive Skin, Soothing Formula, Gentle, Moisturizing Formula, Foaming
* Contains Shea Butter, Aloe Vera, Vitamin A, Oatmeal, Chamomile

Target now carries Nature's Baby Organics Shampoo/Body Washes in Vanilla Tangerine and Lavender Chamomile, and the Fragrance Free Lotion and Bubble Bath in Tangy Tangerine.

Terrific product and excellent service from Body Sense - KC - Minneapolis, MN
My daughter who is 9 LOVES this shampoo & body wash! She is crazy about taking baths/showers and so she loves this product that she can use all over her body. She says that it smells "yummy". I like how soft and shiny her hair is after using it. We also received great service from Body Sense. They carried ALL of the products that I was looking for so everything arrived promptly in one delivery. I would highly recommend Nature's Baby Organics Vanilla Tangerine shampoo & body wash and Body Sense!

The Best Stuff!! - P. Prater - Anchorage, AK
I am a very picky consumer, especially when it comes to my baby and I very much trust the Nature's Baby Organics line. I did a lot of research before my baby was born and decided to try Nature's Baby first; a year later, we're still using their products. We use the shampoo/body wash, conditioner, face & body lotion, massage oil, achoo rub, diaper cream, and diaperpail deodorizer; all with fantastic results. When my baby had a food allergy that resulted in eczema I tried California Baby's Calming wash and lotion with even better results; but California Baby is quite a bit more expensive. Nature's Baby offers great quality at a great price, it's a much better (safer and cleaner) product than the Johnson & Johnson, Aveno, Huggies, and even Arbonne garbage out there! Don't trust companies that put (or even hide) harmful chemical ingredients into their products for you to rub all over your baby. They are motivated by money, not morals/ethics and certinly not caring for babies.

Natural Treatment of Baby Eczema - Fewer Bath Products and Better Nutrition May Be the Answer

What causes baby eczema?

According to the National Institutes of Health, eczema affects up to 20% of infants and children in the United States. The rate of eczema has been rising for years, and is highest in industrialized countries. Hundreds of studies have been undertaken, linking eczema to food allergies, atopy (a triad of conditions including allergy, asthma and eczema), heredity (a child is more likely to get eczema if a parent has an atopic condition), household income (the rate of eczema seems to increase with higher income), houses that are too clean (the "hygiene hypothesis"), houses that are too dirty (dust mite allergy), urban upbringing vs. rural upbringing (kids who grow up on farms have the lowest rates of all atopic conditions)... the list goes on and on.

As eczema is a sign of an underlying condition and not an illness, the answer is probably "all of the above." Eczema can be triggered by food allergies, by contact allergies (contact with irritating substances), by nutritional deficiencies, and as a side effect of other diseases like insulin resistance and diabetes. The eczema trigger is different for each person--and may depend a lot on genetics.

The nutrition hypothesis

The nutritional value of the food we eat has changed dramatically over the past several decades. "Factory farming," where fields are sown with the same vegetables year after year, fertilized with petroleum by-products and sprayed heavily with herbicides and insecticides, has reduced levels of key vitamins and minerals in vegetables. Meat and dairy animals are raised on huge feedlots, fed an unnatural diet of grain and animal by-products, and heavily dosed with antibiotics to keep them alive long enough to slaughter.

Eczema is strongly connected with nutrient deficiency, so it's not surprising that a decline in the nutritional value of food would coincide with an increase in rates of eczema.

Early bathing may irritate newborn skin

Bathing routines and products we take for granted may interfere with the development of healthy infant skin. Babies are born with sterile skin, which is covered by a thick, creamy substance called vernix caseosa. Vernix has antimicrobial and antifungal properties that protect the baby's skin in the womb and after birth, when the baby first comes into contact with bacteria in the outside world. World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for newborn care specify that, to protect the baby, vernix should not be removed for at least six hours. Unfortunately, in modern societies this protective substance is immediately washed off in the hospital, leaving the baby's skin vulnerable to colonization by bacteria and fungi.

Newborn skin is very thin and loses moisture rapidly. It takes a few weeks for infant skin to develop the "acid mantle," a slightly acidic (pH about 5.5) mixture of sebum, sweat and "friendly" bacteria. (By adulthood, skin may be colonized by nearly two hundred different species of bacteria.) Ideally, over the first few weeks of life, a baby's skin is colonized by beneficial bacteria picked up from close contact with the mother and family. These bacteria perform an important function: they keep skin healthy by preventing colonization by disease-causing microorganisms. If this important step is compromised, skin can be colonized by harmful bacteria. The skin of people with eczema tends to carry a high concentration of Staphylococcus aureus, bacteria which cause skin infections, pneumonia, and even MRSA.

Excessive bathing, soap, and moisturizer use can interfere with development of healthy skin

Infant skin will naturally develop a healthy acid mantle and strong immune defenses if it's allowed to. But again, bathing routines and products we take for granted, including soaps and moisturizing lotions, can interfere with this process.

Infant skin is so delicate that even exposure to plain water disturbs it enough to dry it out. Soap accelerates this process by raising the skin's pH and removing beneficial oils, resulting in impaired skin protection for hours after bathing.

Fragrance and preservative chemicals in soaps and moisturizers irritate skin further, and can actually affect the way skin develops. What's worse, these chemicals can be absorbed through an infant's skin into the bloodstream, potentially affecting the baby's developing hormonal system.

A healthier way to care for infant skin

Babies' skin doesn't get very dirty for the first few weeks of life, so generally the less it's interfered with, the healthier it will be. Adding a half-teaspoon of lemon juice--to reduce the water's pH and add skin-friendly ascorbic acid--and a teaspoon of sunflower or safflower oil to the bathwater will keep baby clean without harming skin. If a moisturizer is needed, use a fragrance free baby oil containing sunflower or safflower oil, which are excellent moisturizers and have the added benefit of helping to prevent bacterial skin infections.

If your baby's skin does become irritated, bathing with Epsom salts or Dead Sea salts is a safe and clinically proven way to soothe irritated skin. (Epsom salts are not salt at all, but magnesium sulfate, a natural mineral effective for soothing inflamed skin. Dead Sea salts are evaporated mineral salts from the Dead Sea in Israel.)

Some magnesium in an Epsom salts bath is absorbed through the skin and is a safe way to supplement this important mineral, while Dead Sea salts provide a whole range of vitamins and minerals essential for healthy skin, including magnesium, zinc, potassium, copper, and B vitamins. A teaspoon of bath salts is plenty for an infant bath.

For older kids and for gentle cleansing when soap is required, try a natural bar soap or highly diluted castile soap, like Dr. Bronner's.

Nutrition and healthy infant skin

Nutritional factors affect how a baby's skin develops, too. Deficiencies of zinc or magnesium are fairly common and cause symptoms which are indistinguishable from other types of eczema. A deficiency of vitamin B6 may result in seborrheic dermatitis, or cradle cap.

Baby eczema may be a sign of zinc or magnesium deficiency

When a breast-fed baby develops eczema, the mother's diet is often suspected as the cause. However, the eczema may have nothing to do with food allergy. Breast milk is often low in zinc, and a sign of zinc deficiency is dry, irritated skin. Recent studies suggest that zinc deficiency may be much more common than previously suspected. Low levels of magnesium may also cause eczema-like symptoms by raising the level of histamine in the blood and making the body more sensitive to allergens.

A simple blood test can identify a zinc or magnesium deficiency, and supplementing with the missing mineral may solve the problem. A special kind of zinc can also be applied as a topical cream for absorption through the skin. Caregivers should talk to their pediatrician about correct dosing before giving a baby a vitamin supplement.

Formula-fed babies may also be deficient in vitamins or in essential fatty acids (EFAs)-fats which are essential to healthy development of the brain, nervous system and skin. Some babies may not be able to utilize the vitamins and fats in baby formula, or the formula itself may not provide enough of them. A doctor or knowledgeable nutritionist can help caregivers choose a more appropriate formula or supplement with the necessary vitamins and essential fatty acids-especially zinc, magnesium, and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a type of EFA.

Food allergies and eczema

About 30% of infants and children with eczema test do positive for food allergies. A baby or child has a much greater chance of developing food allergies if either of the parents have allergies themselves. The most common allergens include cow's milk, soy, egg, wheat, peanuts and shellfish. In breastfed babies, allergens from foods may pass directly to the child through breast milk. Avoiding these foods while breastfeeding may keep the child from developing eczema or other allergic reactions. The La Leche League website has an excellent page on allergies and breastfeeding.

In formula-fed babies, changing the formula may eliminate the problem. Special, easy-to-digest hydrolyzed formulas (formulas where the proteins are partially broken down) are often recommended for formula-fed babies with food allergies. Adding probiotics or prebiotics--beneficial bacteria that live in the gut and help digest food--to infant diets helps to reduce or prevent both food allergies and other illnesses and has been shown to help relieve eczema, too.

Breastfeeding longer, introducing solid foods late (after 6 months), introducing new foods one at a time, and waiting to introduce allergenic foods until after the baby is about a year old help reduce the risk of allergic reactions. Most babies outgrow early allergies to milk and eggs, although peanut allergy is more likely to persist to adulthood. However, children with food allergies are more likely to develop asthma or other atopic diseases when they grow older. Caregivers should talk to their pediatrician if they suspect a food allergy. A food elimination diet should only be utilized under a doctor's supervision, to limit the risk of nutrient deficiency.

Steroid creams and ointments commonly prescribed for eczema can cause adrenal damage in infants and children

Steroid creams and ointments are the most commonly prescribed treatment for eczema, but can have dangerous side effects, especially for infants. Steroids are easily absorbed through the skin, and children can absorb a high percentage of the drugs because their skin is thin and they have more skin in relation to their body size. Even short courses of treatment with steroids can cause damage to the adrenal glands, which regulate the body's hormones.

Steroids work by interfering with the chemicals the body uses to signal inflammation. They turn off the inflammation response and cause tiny blood vessels called capillaries to constrict, reducing redness and swelling. Topical steroids also suppress the body's immune system and can lead to an increased susceptibility to fungal or bacterial infections of the skin.

Before using a steroid medicine, caregivers should work with a pediatrician to see if the baby's skin condition is caused by a nutritional deficiency, a food allergy, or irritation from soaps or moisturizers. Treating the root cause, rather than the symptom, of eczema will start a baby on the road to a lifetime of healthy skin. What causes baby eczema?

Meat and dairy animals are raised on huge feedlots, fed an unnatural diet of grain and animal by-products, and heavily dosed with antibiotics to keep them alive long enough to slaughter.

Eczema is strongly connected with nutrient deficiency, so it's not surprising that a decline in the nutritional value of food would coincide with an increase in rates of eczema. Early bathing may irritate newborn skin Bathing routines and products we take for granted may interfere with the development of healthy infant skin.

Excessive bathing, soap, and moisturizer use can interfere with development of healthy skin Infant skin will naturally develop a healthy acid mantle and strong immune defenses if it's allowed to.

A healthier way to care for infant skin Babies' skin doesn't get very dirty for the first few weeks of life, so generally the less it's interfered with, the healthier it will be.
