Recalled Strollers - What to Do For a Recalled Product

In recent news, strollers by Maclaren have been recalled. While this recall of nearly one million strollers is the second largest in the US since 2000, it prompts the owner - particularly of such baby products - to wonder what to do in a recall. While the obvious answer may be to stop using the product, manufacturers like Maclaren give the option of choosing a hinge cover to correct the error. As cribs and even baby food have been in the news recently for product recalls, what should a parent do in such instances to protect his or her child from a potentially hazardous product?

In the case of the recent Maclaren recall, the hinges on the stroller proved to be dangerous on some umbrella stroller models. 12 children in the US had fingertip amputations from such strollers, which prompted the product recall. While this recall isn't for all versions of Maclaren strollers, check which stroller models are being recalled. However, while this appears to be a North American issue with Maclaren, the UK-based manufacturer has yet to release a recall statement in Great Britain, although children there have also had fingertips amputated from umbrella strollers as well. The hinge covers, additionally, are not available in the UK, either.

When you're in such a situation, what do you do if you own a product that has been recalled? For larger baby products, such as strollers and cribs, two options exist: Wait for the repair kit or buy a new product. Many manufacturers promise a repair kit will fix the defective part, but will it make the stroller safe? In many cases, the best bet for your child's safety is to purchase a new product that doesn't pose a risk to your child.
